When control gets out of hand

We are all familiar with the phenomenon that certain thoughts keep popping up in our heads and we carry out certain actions in a nonsensical way, even though we actually know better. In the case of obsessive-compulsive disorder, however, the phenomena described take on a completely different dimension.

The disorder manifests itself through constantly recurring obsessive thoughts, disturbing impulses, imaginations and ideas. In addition, there are compulsive actions that sufferers “have to” perform again and again in a stereotypical manner. An inner pressure is experienced that torments those affected and places a heavy burden on their lives. The compulsion interferes with everyday life and social life. They often feel ashamed of their obsessive thoughts and actions and experience considerable distress. Obsessive-compulsive disorders, which affect around 2-3% of the population in Germany, are often accompanied by other mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety disorders. At our private clinic for adolescent psychiatry, we specialize in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Let our experts advise you now without obligation on 08682 2159 590.

Symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder

  • Strong inner, subjective urge to do certain things (compulsive actions) or think certain things (compulsive thoughts)
  • Those affected recognize that the compulsions are pointless, but are unable to free themselves from them or find it difficult to suppress them
  • Obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions often occur in combination and are often accompanied by other mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety disorders

Frequent compulsive actions

  • Compulsive washing (hands, clothes, home, etc.)
  • Compulsive checking (stove, windows, doors, etc.)
  • Compulsion for symmetrical arrangement
  • Counting according to certain patterns
  • Repetition of prayer phrases, words or sentences

Causes and background of obsessive-compulsive disorder

Several factors must interact for an obsessive-compulsive disorder to develop. The risk factors include

  • Vulnerability: Different susceptibility to mental illness
  • Biological factors: Impaired neurotransmitter balance in the brain
  • Genetic factors: Obsessive-compulsive disorders occur more frequently in some families for genetic reasons. However, it must be taken into account that children can also pick up compulsive behavior.
  • Development/upbringing: An upbringing that provides little security can lead to compulsive behavior
  • Psychological models: An initially harmless but intrusive thought is judged to be dangerous. This leads to restlessness and agitation. This restlessness is “regulated down” by the compulsive action. The result is a self-reinforcing vicious circle.
  • Coping with anxiety: In order to better deal with anxiety, obsessive actions and obsessive thoughts are integrated into everyday life.
  • Formative life events such as physical or sexual violence, emotional neglect or the early death of a parent. Compulsive actions are then used in an attempt to regain control over situations.
  • Chronic stress
